Up to 40 firefighters tackled a ‘challenging’ blaze at the abandoned Nations nightclub in Plymouth yesterday, Saturday, 1 March.

A thick, black smoke cloud could be seen for miles, while the fire service urged people to stay indoors with their windows closed.

Fire crews from across the county used their best efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby KFC and other properties.

Devon and Cornwall Police are now working with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire.

Speaking to Plymouth Plus, Simon Carey, Group Commander of Plymouth Response Group at Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said:

"We had a call to a developed fire at a commercial premises on Octagon Street, which turned out to be the building next to Kentucky Fried Chicken.
We’ve had approximately 40 firefighters at this incident, along with our incident command unit and Aerial Ladder Platform.

We had a fire on the first and second floors, which had spread to the adjoining roof of the property next door, which was directly above KFC.
This was a challenging incident. Access was gained from the front and rear of the property and from above. The crews have done really well to stop it spreading from that roof space any further.

A joint police-led fire investigation will now take place with CSI and ourselves."
