Plymouth Plus can reveal that an explosion on the National Gird Network was the cause of an aqua-blue pulsating light across the entire Plymouth sky tonight.

Many posted footage of the glowing skyline to social media, saying the sky was “bright as day” and that they thought “we had been bombed”.

Power was also cut while residents were left baffled by the haunting light show - which even led some to suspect an alien invasion.

A National Grid Electricity Distribution spokesperson said:

"We are aware of a fault on our overhead network, which briefly affected electricity supplies in Plymouth around 8:20pm this evening. Our colleagues arrived on site to ensure the area was safe and power was restored to customers within ten minutes. We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding.”
