Residents have said that they thought ‘the Navy had a bomb go off’ after a huge crash on Saltash Road in the early hours of this morning Thursday February 6.
Witnesses have described a car involved in the Plymouth crash driving in excess of ‘at least 60 miles per hour’. A 21-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.
Local resident Nikki Clements said:
“I actually thought the Navy had a bomb go off it was that loud!
This is the fifth serious incident that has happened along the stretch of road in the vicinity of Drake Primary School in the 16 months me and my family have lived here that required emergency services attendance.
It is not unusual at all to see cars, vans and motorcycles travelling well in excess of the 30mph limit, and the 20mph limit in force during the school arrival and leaving times.
Plymouth Council Highways ‘statistics’ report speeding is not an issue - apparently 15% of vehicles speeding is not enough to warrant action being taken.”
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police has said:
"Police were notified at around 1.30am this morning to reports of a vehicle colliding with several parked cars on Saltash Road in Keyham, Plymouth.
A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink and is in police custody."
